Clone 13 Pinot Noir

The heart of Kings Mountain Pinot Noir is Clone #13, derived from the vineyards of Louis Martini. Believed to have originated from cuttings transported from Burgundy, Martini is one of the oldest Pinot Noir clones in California. In homage to its Burgundian roots, the Clone 13 label depicts the beautiful 1920’s Chateau-like theater that graces our estate property.

2013 Clone 13

The 2013 has aromas of grilled plums, sweet strawberry jam, leather, smoke, spice and a hint of grilled chiles. It promises a wine of breadth and depth. At first it’s like a carriage pulled by a two-horse team of oak and acid that threaten to make off with goods, but it quickly settles down with some air to reveal a positively potent Pinot, fleshed with dusty earth, dark plum, savory meat and racy raspberry. The finish erupts like a volcano of fine tannin. Clearly it has the horsepower to carry it through decades in the cellar.

2012 Clone 13

The 2012 holds aromas of grilled plum, warm earth, underbrush, pine forest, soy, basil, and Worcestershire. Flavors of plum tart with ginger and clove, savory meat, pomegranate fruit leather, sun-dried tomato, and black olives. Overall, it is a wine of breadth, depth, raw power and driving energy that takes your mouth by storm. Relentless, in a good way.
